Viktor Yushchenko is a Ukrainian politician best known for serving as the country’s third president (2005–2010) and for an earlier career as an economist and banker. As governor of the National Bank in the 1990s, he took part in the creation of the national currency, the hryvnia, and helped curb hyperinflation, restoring exchange-rate stability after the 1998 Russian crisis. His training in economics and banking shaped his public work. As prime minister (1999–2001) and later leader of the Our Ukraine coalition, Yushchenko became a central figure of the opposition to the established authorities, culminating in the 2004 presidential contest. During the campaign he suffered dioxin poisoning that disfigured him; the incident and its fallout mobilized the movement known as the Orange Revolution. After the second-round vote was repeated, he defeated Viktor Yanukovych and took office. His government favored a pro-Western course and pursued closer ties with European institutions such as the EU and NATO, but it was marked by political conflict, legislative deadlock and declining popularity, especially after disputes with allies like Yulia Tymoshenko. He later returned to party leadership but never regained his previous electoral strength. Today he is remembered both for achievements in stabilizing the country’s finances and for the tensions and limitations of his presidency.
