Vinayak Dāmodar Sāvarkar was a central figure in Indian nationalism and one of the ideologues of Hindutva. A lawyer, writer and orator, he organized himself from a young age in revolutionary circles, cofounding secret societies that sought independence by insurrectionary means. In London he joined groups such as India House and published historical and political studies — including a work on the 1857 rebellion that was banned by the colonial authorities. Arrested in 1910 for involvement in conspiracies against British rule, he was convicted and deported to the Andaman Islands prison, where he remained for decades until his release. After this period of confinement, he moderated his direct confrontation with colonial power and began to emphasize the political and cultural unity of Hindus, promoting the idea of India as a Hindu nation. As leader of the Hindu Mahasabha, Savarkar played an influential role in pre‑independence politics, forging alliances and defending controversial positions, such as support for Indian participation in World War II under British direction. His career left a complex legacy: he combined anti‑colonial struggle with a political doctrine that shaped debates about identity, community and the state on the subcontinent.
