Wah Kau Kong was an officer in the United States Army Air Forces and is recognized as the first Chinese‑American fighter pilot. A native of Hawai‘i, he graduated in chemistry from the University of Hawaii and, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, entered the aviation cadet program, standing out in the selection exams. Transferred to Europe, he served with the 353rd Fighter Squadron of the 354th Fighter Group and flew the P‑51 Mustang on bomber‑escort missions. Kong scored at least one confirmed and one half aerial victory, and contemporary press cited his performance in combat over Germany. On the return from his twelfth mission he shot down a Focke‑Wulf Fw 190; on his fourteenth mission, in February 1944, he was hit and killed in action over Blomberg. His aircraft exploded in flight and his remains were initially buried by the Germans. After the war his remains were identified and reinterred at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. His name and story have been commemorated in public tributes, including mention in the Congressional Record, and inspired a memorial scholarship at the University of Hawaii, preserving his legacy as a pioneer among Chinese‑American aviators.
