Werner Scholem was a German communist politician and journalist, active mainly in the 1920s and 1930s. A militant of the leftmost wing of the labor movement, he joined the leadership of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) between 1924 and 1925, taking part in the so‑called triad with Ruth Fischer and Arkadi Maslow, and served in the Landtag of Prussia (1921–1925) and the Reichstag (1924–1928). While still young he edited socialist and communist newspapers and became known as an organizer and head of information within party structures and in the anti‑military apparatus.

In the context of internal struggles within international communism, Scholem was marginalized after 1925, was expelled from the KPD in 1926 for opposing the repression of the left in the Soviet Union, and remained connected to currents of the Left Opposition, contributing to publications such as Permanente Revolution. He founded the Leninbund and left it shortly thereafter, and continued to be a figure of the radical and dissident left in Germany.

Because he was Jewish and a former communist parliamentarian, he was arrested after the Nazis came to power in 1933, held in “preventive custody” and deported to Buchenwald in 1938. In 1940 he was executed at the camp, an episode that exemplifies the lethal repression directed at political opponents and groups persecuted by the Nazi regime.
