Wilhelm Canaris was a German admiral and head of military intelligence (Abwehr) from 1935 to 1944. A career officer in the Imperial Navy, he distinguished himself in World War I commanding submarines and, in the interwar period, devoted himself to collecting and processing intelligence, holding a prominent position without joining the Nazi Party. On taking charge of the Abwehr, Canaris organized espionage networks, notably in Spain during the civil war, and maintained secret contacts with British services. As Hitler’s aggressive policies deepened, he gradually distanced himself from Nazi ideology and began to collaborate with military resistance circles (Widerstand), participating in plots to remove Hitler from power. During World War II he played an ambiguous role: officially head of intelligence while simultaneously favoring and protecting agents opposed to the regime and at times passing secret information to the Allies. Growing suspicions about his loyalty led to his dismissal in 1944, house arrest, and subsequent imprisonment after the July 20 assassination attempt. Canaris is remembered for his ambivalent stance between service to the state and involvement in the resistance, a complex figure of the Nazi period.
