Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was a German physicist and mechanical engineer whose experimental research launched the era of radiology. On November 8, 1895, he produced and detected a form of radiation previously unknown — the so‑called X‑rays — and described its properties in a paper published that same year. This discovery opened the way for imaging techniques that reveal internal structures without surgery, transforming medical practice and scientific research.

Röntgen trained as an engineer and earned his doctorate at the University of Zurich, taught at several German universities, and spent many years at the University of Munich. His studies covered diverse topics such as thermal conductivity, the electrical properties of quartz, and optical effects in materials, reflecting an experimental, multidisciplinary profile.

For the practical and conceptual impact of his discovery, he received the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901, donating the award money to the university. His name entered scientific terminology and has been honored in the names of chemical elements and various institutions; he is today recognized as the founder of diagnostic radiology, with a lasting legacy in medicine and experimental science.
