William (1842) James

William James was an American philosopher and psychologist whose work shaped both philosophy and psychology in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Recognized as a central figure of pragmatism and as one of the founders of functional psychology, James introduced systematic instruction in experimental psychology at Harvard and published seminal works such as The Principles of Psychology, Pragmatism, and The Varieties of Religious Experience. Trained in medicine, he chose to devote himself to research and teaching, holding professorships in physiology, psychology, and philosophy at Harvard. His approach combined empirical investigation with philosophical reflection, leading to the formulation of radical empiricism and to significant contributions on consciousness, belief, and religious experience. James was also interested in paranormal phenomena, taking part in research on mediumship, and maintained a wide intellectual exchange, influencing and engaging with thinkers such as Charles Peirce, John Dewey, Edmund Husserl, and Bertrand Russell. His legacy endures in his influence on philosophical and psychological currents, in the training of generations of students, and in the consolidation of psychology as an academic discipline in the United States.
