William Ewart Gladstone was a British statesman and a leading liberal figure of the 19th century, with a parliamentary career spanning more than six decades. He served as Prime Minister in four terms between 1868 and 1894, totaling twelve years in office, and was Chancellor of the Exchequer on four occasions for over twelve years. His political career began as a High Tory, passed through the Peelites, and culminated with him as a central figure of the new Liberal Party. Gladstone became known for Gladstonian liberalism, which advocated equal opportunity and free trade, and for his appeal to the working classes, earning him the nickname "The People's William." During his first ministry he advanced significant reforms, such as the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland and the introduction of the secret ballot. He also led the historic Midlothian Campaign and faced colonial and Irish crises in later governments. He tried to implement autonomous government for Ireland, a proposal that deeply divided his party. In addition to his political work, he devoted himself to classical studies, writing an extensive treatise on Homer. He is remembered as one of the most influential political figures of Victorian Britain and a touchstone of the period's liberalism.
