William L. Shirer was an American journalist, historian, and writer, known for his direct coverage of Nazi Germany and for reference works on World War II. A graduate of Coe College, he built a career as a correspondent in European capitals, working for outlets such as the Chicago Tribune, the New York Herald Tribune, and Universal News Service, and became one of the first CBS reporters to broadcast from Europe to the United States.
Present in Berlin during the 1930s and until 1940, Shirer witnessed events that preceded and marked the early months of the conflict and had personal contact with key political figures of the time. His notes from that period produced Berlin Diary (1941), a critical account of the Nazi regime that had a major impact in the United States.
After returning to the U.S., he covered the San Francisco Conference (1945) and, back in Europe, the Nuremberg Trials. In 1960 he published The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, a comprehensive and widely cited study of the course of Nazism. Over his life he also published works on France, biographies and memoirs, as well as a few novels.
His legacy endures in historiography and war reporting, both for his firsthand documentation and for analytical syntheses that helped shape the public’s understanding of the period.
