William Howell Masters was an American gynecologist and researcher, known for forming the duo “Masters and Johnson” with Virginia E. Johnson, pioneers in the scientific study of human sexual response and in the treatment of sexual dysfunctions. From the late 1950s, his research changed clinical approaches to sexuality by combining physiological measurement and direct observation to map the phases of arousal, orgasm, and resolution. Before devoting himself to sexology, Masters built a career in obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University, where he introduced techniques such as caudal anesthesia in childbirth, developed infertility programs — including one of the first sperm banks in the United States — and described the condition known as the Allen–Masters syndrome associated with post-pregnancy pelvic pain. Masters’s notoriety stems both from his innovative methodology and from the social impact of his findings, which encouraged the medicalization and treatment of sexual dysfunctions and prompted debates about ethics and privacy in human research. His legacy endures in sexual medicine and medical sex education, influencing generations of professionals and expanding the biomedical understanding of human sexuality.
