William Worrall Mayo was an English-born physician and chemist who built his career in the United States and is recognized for founding the medical practice that evolved into what became the Mayo Clinic. Trained in medicine at the University of Missouri, he broadened his scientific knowledge by studying in Manchester under the influence of John Dalton and developed laboratory skills—such as use of the microscope—that set him apart from many clinicians of his time. After settling in communities in Minnesota, he gained practical experience in a range of settings: treating cholera outbreaks, serving in military medicine during regional conflicts, and organizing relief for refugees. He also worked in various occupations—pharmacist, farmer, ferry operator and even newspaper editor—before establishing his practice in Rochester. His most enduring legacy lies in the professional tradition passed to his sons, William James and Charles Horace Mayo, who founded the joint practice in the 1880s and turned the family clinic into a leading medical center. Mayo’s career illustrates the shift from the nineteenth-century physician-surgeon toward a more institutionalized, scientific practice.
