Sukarno was one of the leading figures of the Indonesian independence movement and became the country’s first president, serving from 1945 to 1967. A charismatic figure and influential orator, he was notable for forging national unity across an archipelago of great ethnic, cultural and religious diversity, and he led diplomacy and the resistance against Dutch colonial rule until independence was recognized in 1949.

During his presidency, Sukarno moved from an unstable parliamentary system to an authoritarian model called “Guided Democracy” (1959), which sought to centralize power to preserve state cohesion and confront internal rebellions. In foreign policy he adopted an anti‑imperialist stance, drawing closer to the Soviet Union and China and positioning Indonesia as a voice of the Third World.

In the early 1960s Sukarno’s support for the Indonesian Communist Party and leftist policies increased tensions with the armed forces and with Islamist and conservative sectors. The failure of the September 30 Movement in 1965 set off a wave of violence that led to the eradication of the PKI and the rise of General Suharto.

Deposed in 1967, Sukarno spent his final years under house arrest until his death in 1970. His legacy remains controversial: he is remembered both for his founding role in independence and the construction of national identity and for the authoritarian measures and political crisis that marked the end of his rule.
