Thomas Mann was one of the most important German novelists and essayists of the 20th century, author of foundational works such as Buddenbrooks, The Magic Mountain and Death in Venice. Born into a bourgeois family in Lübeck, Mann transformed personal experience and social conflicts into analytical fiction, examining tensions between Protestant ethics, bourgeois life and individual impulses. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929, he gained international recognition especially for Buddenbrooks, the novel that brought him prominence at age 26. Throughout his career he alternated between fiction and essays, reflecting on culture, politics and modernity; his public stance shifted from patriotism to a later critique of nationalism, particularly in response to Nazism. With Hitler’s rise he emigrated, living in Switzerland and the United States, and maintained active intellectual and political engagement until his return to Europe after the war. His legacy endures in the literary tradition for combining psychological depth, cultural erudition and a critical view of bourgeois society.
