David Randolph Scott is a former Air Force officer, test pilot and American astronaut, known for flying three space missions and for commanding the historic Apollo 15 mission. A graduate of the United States Military Academy and holder of master’s degrees in aeronautics/astronautics from MIT, Scott gained extensive experience as a fighter pilot in Europe and as a test pilot, logging more than five thousand hours in advanced aircraft before being selected by NASA in 1963. His first flight was Gemini VIII (1966), alongside Neil Armstrong, a mission that had to be aborted due to a thruster malfunction. He also flew on Apollo 9 (1969), which tested crucial Apollo spacecraft systems in orbit. In 1971 he commanded Apollo 15, spending three days on the lunar surface in the Hadley–Apennine region, where he led scientific experiments and collected geological samples. Apollo 15 was regarded as a technical and scientific success, although the crew was later criticized for carrying unauthorized postal envelopes to the Moon. After leaving active flight status, Scott served as director of the Dryden Flight Research Center and worked as a consultant for projects and companies in the space sector, leaving a legacy as one of the central astronauts of the Apollo era.
