Siegfried Wagner was a German composer and conductor, a member of a musical dynasty—son of Richard Wagner and grandson of Franz Liszt—who played a central role in the artistic leadership of the Bayreuth Festival from 1908 until 1930. Trained initially in architecture and later decisively drawn to music, he studied with prominent figures of the time and built a career as a theatrical and symphonic composer.
Productive in opera, Siegfried wrote numerous dramatic works between the late nineteenth century and the following decades; many premieres took place in cities such as Munich, Hamburg and Karlsruhe—although his catalogue did not enter the standard repertory on a lasting basis. Notable among his compositions are Der Bärenhäuter, Bruder Lustig, Banadietrich and Der Schmied von Marienburg, as well as symphonic poems and orchestral pieces.
As a cultural administrator, he maintained his family’s continuity at the Bayreuth Festival, confronting personal and social pressures in a sensitive historical context in the early twentieth century. He died in 1930 and was succeeded as festival director by his widow; his legacy is linked both to preserving the Wagnerian tradition and to his own works, which remain of interest to societies and museums devoted to the Wagner family.
