Adolf von Baeyer was a German chemist whose work transformed organic chemistry and the dyestuff industry. He is best known for the synthesis of indigo and for characterizing dyes such as the phthaleins, as well as for the first preparations of fluorescein; these achievements spurred the industrial production of pigments and analytical applications. His investigations also covered polyacetylenes, oxonium salts, nitroso compounds and derivatives of uric acid, including the discovery of barbital, a precursor of the barbiturates.

Baeyer made important contributions to structural theory: he formulated the strain theory for carbon rings and proposed the correct representation of indole, influencing nomenclature and the understanding of molecular stability. The extension of his nomenclature for cyclic compounds was incorporated into systems that evolved toward IUPAC standards.

Recognized internationally, he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1905 for his services to organic chemistry and the chemical industry. His name lives on in classic reactions and concepts (Baeyer–Villiger, the Baeyer reagent, Von Baeyer’s strain theory) and in medals and scientific toponyms that attest to his legacy in modern chemistry.
