Adolf Brand was a German writer and activist, known for his pioneering role in the public defense of male homosexuality and bisexuality. Influenced by the egoist philosopher Max Stirner, he founded in 1896 the publishing house that issued Der Eigene, considered the world’s first regular homosexual magazine, a space that gathered essays, poetry and art and featured important contributors of the time.
Brand also organized, in 1903, the Gemeinschaft der Eigenen, a movement that promoted a vision of love between men inspired by classical ideals and physical education, combining outdoor activities, mountaineering and aspects of the naturist culture. He rejected medical interpretations that pathologized homosexuality, defending individual sovereignty and a conception of male relationships as one among several life choices.
His activism provoked legal confrontations and imprisonments; he authored outing campaigns and became involved in public controversies that led to convictions. With the rise of Nazism, Der Eigene was silenced, Brand was persecuted and abandoned activism; he and his wife died in Berlin during bombings in February 1945. His legacy remains in the history of the early movements for visibility and homoerotic rights in Germany.
