Alberto Lattuada was an Italian director and screenwriter whose career spanned neorealism and several strands of postwar cinema. Trained as an architect, he early allied himself with fellow filmmakers and began his career collaborating on screenplays before establishing himself as an author. The son of composer Felice Lattuada, he took an active part in Italian cultural debates, founding a literary publication in his youth and supporting initiatives such as the Cineteca Italiana to preserve film heritage.
His filmography mixes social dramas, comedies and literary adaptations, with notable works including The Bandit (1946), Without Pity (1947), The Mill on the Po (1948), The Overcoat (1951) and The Mogul (1962). He also worked on television episodes and series, maintaining a steady output from the 1940s through the 1980s. Lattuada repeatedly returned to literary texts, adapting novels and short stories, including works by Russian authors.
Recognized as one of the exponents of neorealism and as a scholar of Italian cinema, his legacy comprises both the thematic and formal range of his films and his contribution to the institutionalization of film culture in Italy.
