Alexander Alexandrovich Alekhine was one of the greatest chess players of the first third of the twentieth century, known for a distinctly aggressive and creative style. Born in Russia and later naturalized French, he rose to prominence early by winning national titles and becoming a master in 1909; his career includes winning the World Championship in 1927, a title he held for long periods until 1946. Beyond the decisive confrontation with José Raúl Capablanca, Alekhine featured in the era’s major rivalries and matches, contributed to theoretical study, and lent his name to the Alekhine Defense and other ideas that remain in high‑level repertoire. He lived and worked in several countries, mastered multiple languages, and maintained intense competitive and research activity in chess. Alekhine’s figure is also controversial: during World War II antisemitic articles appeared under his name and his conduct toward Nazi authorities remains the subject of debate; the authorship and motives have been questioned, producing ambivalence about his personal legacy. He died in 1946 in Estoril, and his theoretical contributions and games continue to influence the history of chess.
