Alexandra David‑Néel (pen name of Louise Eugénie Alexandrine Marie David) was a writer, explorer and scholar of Buddhism whose work played a key role in introducing Tibet and Tibetan spiritual practices to the West. Over more than a decade of travel and residence in Tibet, she established herself as a researcher of customs, meditation and rituals, and was recognized as the first European woman to be consecrated as a lama. Her observations of practices such as tumo — a meditation technique for generating body heat — and her account of the creation of tulpas became reference points for readers and scholars interested in Tibetan mysticism. The author of more than forty books, David‑Néel combined travel narrative, ethnography and spiritual reflection, shaping Western interest in Buddhism and contributing to debates on psychic phenomena and esotericism. Her intellectual formation was influenced by contacts with anarchist and feminist currents in France, which informed her critiques of social hierarchies and of women’s economic roles. A controversial and captivating figure, she received institutional recognition — including the gold medal of the Paris Geographical Society and the Légion d’Honneur — and left a lasting legacy as a popularizer of Tibet and Tibetan spiritual traditions in the twentieth century.
