Alice A. Bailey (Alice LaTrobe Bateman) was an English-born writer and spiritual researcher whose work shaped 20th-century esotericism. Initially involved in Christian activism, she moved to the United States, joined the Theosophical Society and, beginning in 1919, began publishing a large series of texts that she said were dictated to her by a Tibetan master. Those writings sought to systematize and expand esoteric teachings, addressing topics such as initiation, spiritual psychology, the cosmic fire, and esoteric astrology. Her institutional activity included founding organizations and publishing houses with her husband Foster Bailey to disseminate these ideas, including Lucis Trust (originally Lucifer Publishing Company), the Arcane School, and study and meditation initiatives. The promotion of “goodwill” and methods of group work—known as the Triangles—became part of her strategy to influence human relations and international politics. Bailey’s literary output influenced esoteric circles and generated internal debate within the Theosophical movement, drawing both adherents and critics. Her legacy remains associated with the dissemination of a systematized body of spiritual teaching that continues to be studied and practiced by groups and publishers linked to this tradition.
