Alice Notley was an American poet associated with the second generation of the New York School, whose work influenced later generations by addressing both formal innovation and personal themes such as motherhood and domestic life. Her experimentation with meter and genre — evident in books like 165 Meeting House Lane, The Descent of Alette and Culture of One — redefined possibilities for verse, alternating between rhythmic reinventions and inventive uses of quotation and form.
Beyond her poetry collections, Notley published literary criticism, wrote a play and a biography, and served as an editor of literary magazines, contributing to the independent poetry scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Her artistic practice also included collages and illustrations that appeared on covers and in short films.
Active as a teacher and mentor, she led influential workshops at the Poetry Project and in programs such as Naropa, bringing together and training emerging poets. Recognized by critics and prizes such as the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, Notley left a legacy as a central voice in contemporary American poetry, marked by formal rigor and a commitment to personal life as poetic material.
