Arthur Friedrich Hugo Nebe was a senior police and SS official in the Nazi regime, known for his central role in the Reich’s security apparatus and, from 1941, as one of the main executors of the Holocaust. He rose through the Prussian police to head the criminal police (Kripo) in 1936; that office was incorporated into the Reich Main Security Office (RSHA) in 1939, consolidating his influence over the Nazi repressive machinery.
In preparation for the invasion of the Soviet Union, Nebe volunteered to command Einsatzgruppe B, one of the mobile units responsible for mass executions in territories occupied by Army Group Centre. contemporary reports document tens of thousands of victims under his command and record his direct involvement in coordinating arrests, deportations and the extermination of Jews and other persecuted groups.
Back in Berlin he resumed posts in the RSHA and retained a prominent role until he was denounced and executed after the failed July 1944 assassination plot. Postwar attempts to portray him as a professional policeman linked to the conspiracy against Hitler have been rejected by historical research, which characterizes him as an opportunist and mass perpetrator motivated by racism and careerism.
