Auberon Waugh was an English journalist, occasional novelist and satirist, known for the caustic column he wrote for various newspapers and magazines from the 1960s through the 2000s. The eldest son of the novelist Evelyn Waugh, he built his own career in journalism: he worked for the Daily Telegraph, The Spectator, Private Eye and The Sunday Telegraph, among other outlets, and became known for the conservative, critical and often provocative tone of his columns. After a classical education at Downside and a brief spell at Oxford, Waugh began informally in journalism as a young reporter and columnist, writing political and social commentary that brought him public notice. He also wrote novels early in his career but abandoned fiction because of the burden of comparison with his father. He was notable for firm positions against certain reforms and movements — notably criticism of post‑Vatican II developments and of progressive governments — and for the acidic humour of columns such as those in Private Eye and his weekly newspaper pieces. His style and controversies left a disputed legacy: admired by readers who valued his resistance to what he saw as unwanted “modernizations,” and criticized by others for stances seen as nostalgically exclusive.
