Augusto Ferrando Chirichigno was a Peruvian television host, horse-racing announcer, sports narrator and actor, a leading presence in Peru’s cultural life from the 1950s to the 1990s. Renowned for his booming voice and vivacious delivery, he began as a horse-racing announcer at fifteen and became the country’s foremost race caller. On radio he also stood out, hosting programs on stations such as Radio Central.
His most prominent television work was hosting Trampolín a la fama, a talent show he presented for roughly thirty years on Panamericana Televisión. The program launched generations of amateur singers and comedians and became one of the most-watched shows in Peruvian television history, while also drawing criticism for comments regarded as discriminatory.
Beyond television and radio, Ferrando organized and promoted the so-called Peña Ferrando, a comic-musical revue that toured neighborhoods of Lima and the provinces, showcasing emerging artists. He also appeared in films and received posthumous recognitions, including the Ventana de Oro award bestowed by the network that made him prominent. His death in 1999 provoked widespread public mourning and marked the close of an era in popular Peruvian broadcasting.
