Barbara Ruick was an American actress and singer, known for her work in film and television in the 1950s and 1960s. The daughter of two actors, she began her career on radio and in nightclubs, eventually signing with Metro‑Goldwyn‑Mayer, where she recorded singles and took part in studio sessions, including material by Gershwin. In films she moved from bit parts to supporting roles, most notably as Carrie Pipperidge in the 1956 screen adaptation of Carousel. On television she appeared on popular programs of the era and had roles in series and specials, including the 1965 Rodgers and Hammerstein telecast of Cinderella, in which she was part of the cast. Her recording work also included sessions backed by arrangements from Nelson Riddle. She married composer John Williams, with whom she had three children; one of their sons became the lead singer of the band Toto. Although she cut back on film work during her marriage, she remained visible for her vocal and dramatic performances. She is remembered for her versatility as both singer and actress and for her contributions to postwar American entertainment.
