Alexander I (1777–1825) was Emperor of Russia from 1801 until his death, also taking the titles King of Poland and Grand Duke of Finland. The son of Paul I, he succeeded to the throne after his father’s assassination and began his reign with a relatively liberal address, promoting educational and scientific reforms and proposing — without implementing — changes to serfdom and to the organization of the state. On the international stage, he became the central Russian figure in the Napoleonic Wars: he shifted between alliances with and against Napoleon, joined the coalitions that culminated in the invasion of France and the fall of the French emperor, and was one of the architects of the Holy Alliance to contain revolutionary movements in Europe. His role at the Congress of Vienna consolidated Russian influence over Poland. Over the second period of his reign he grew more conservative and religious under the influence of mystical currents; this was reflected in increasingly repressive domestic policies and in the fading prospects for reform. His death without heirs in 1825 precipitated the succession crisis that led to the Decembrist uprising and the accession of his brother Nicholas I.
