Duke and dynastic head of the ducal house of Württemberg, Albrecht (A. Maria Alexander Philipp Joseph) was a prominent military figure in World War I and led his house until 1939. He earned a law degree in Tübingen and served as an officer in the Prussian army from 1885, rising to senior commands: he was commander of the 13th Corps in Stuttgart, attained the rank of Generaloberst, and in 1914 commanded the 4th Army. He led operations in the Ardennes, at the Marne and in the fighting in Flanders, including the Second Battle of Ypres, and commanded an army group east of Verdun until the armistice. He received the Pour le Mérite and was promoted to Generalfeldmarschall in 1916. After the monarchy fell in 1918, he became head of the House of Württemberg in 1921 and established himself at Altshausen Castle. Although he led his family during a period of political and social transition, he kept his distance from the Nazi regime, a stance reflected in the limited official representation at his funeral. He is also the author of a text on General Wu Peifu.
