Barry Morris Goldwater was a Republican senator from Arizona, a central figure in the conservative resurgence in the United States in the 1950s–1960s, and the Republican presidential nominee in 1964. A former officer in the Air Force Reserve, he focused on defense policy throughout his legislative career, returned to the Senate in 1969, and influenced reforms of the military high command, notably contributing to the Goldwater–Nichols Act of 1986.

Known as “Mr. Conservative,” Goldwater rejected the legacy of the New Deal and mobilized a militant base that transformed Republican primaries, although his 1964 presidential bid ended in a crushing defeat. That loss, paradoxically, helped clear the way for the reorganization of the conservative movement that would bring leaders such as Ronald Reagan to prominence.

During the 1980s Goldwater became notable for liberal positions on civil issues and individual liberties, clashing with the religious right within his party on matters such as abortion, LGBT rights, and the decriminalization of medical marijuana. His legacy combines the renewal of political conservatism with a marked commitment to individual freedoms and national defense reform.
