Jim Bakker is an American televangelist whose career shaped both the expansion and the crises of the evangelical television movement. In the 1970s and 1980s he rose to prominence by creating and hosting The PTL Club, founding the PTL Satellite Network, and developing the Heritage USA complex, a religious and entertainment enterprise that became one of the most visited theme parks in the United States at the time. The ministry’s financial success was accompanied by controversial accounting and administrative practices. Investigations indicated misuse of PTL funds for personal benefit and questionable payments, culminating in revelations about a payment to an employee that prompted his resignation in 1987 and led to later criminal charges and conviction. These episodes weakened his influence and generated extensive media coverage. After serving a prison sentence and divorcing, Bakker returned to ministry, remarried, and rebuilt a television presence with The Jim Bakker Show, which focuses on eschatological themes and the promotion of survival products. He has also written works about his personal experience and prophetic perspective.
