Bartolomeo Vanzetti was an Italian anarchist active in the United States labor movement in the 1920s. An immigrant and labor leader, he became a central figure in a criminal case that polarized international public opinion — the joint trial with Nicola Sacco for the double homicide that took place in 1920 in Braintree, Massachusetts. The case unfolded amid intense postwar social tension, marked by xenophobia, fear of anarchism, and anti‑immigrant sentiment. During the trial, questions arose about the evidence presented: inconclusive ballistics, contradictory testimony, and communication difficulties with immigrant witnesses, factors that undermined the clarity of the proceedings. Vanzetti spent six years in prison asserting his innocence and making his antimilitary and anarchist views public, which also affected the jury’s perception. In 1927 he was executed in the electric chair along with Sacco, an event that provoked widespread mourning and international protests. Later academic studies and an official recognition in 1977 pointed to flaws and prejudices that tainted the trial, turning Vanzetti into a historical symbol of judicial injustice, political intolerance, and immigrant rights.
