Benny Fields (born Benjamin Geisenfeld) was an American popular singer whose career flourished from the 1920s into the 1950s, best known as one half of the celebrated vaudeville duo Blossom Seeley–Benny Fields. From Milwaukee, he began his professional career in Chicago and rose to prominence by joining Seeley’s act in 1921, later becoming her stage partner and husband. The contrast between Fields’s restrained delivery and Seeley’s exuberant style brought them success on stage, in recordings, in musical short films and on radio broadcasts. The couple amassed prosperity until the 1929 crash, which wiped out their savings; the decline of vaudeville deepened their troubles and led to bankruptcy in the mid-1930s. Fields rebuilt his career as a solo performer beginning in 1933, remaining active in New York and appearing intermittently in films and on records for labels such as Decca and Variety. His career received a renewed boost from the acclaimed film Minstrel Man (1944), which highlighted his naturalistic presence on screen. In subsequent decades Seeley and Fields returned to public attention through filmed biographies, LPs and television appearances, cementing a legacy tied to the golden age of vaudeville and American popular music.
