Benoît Mandelbrot was a Polish-born mathematician and polymath, known for developing the modern notion of fractal geometry and introducing the term “fractal.” Over a career spent between France and the United States, he established that structures that appear chaotic—such as coastlines, clouds, or financial series—exhibit patterns of self-similarity and quantitative regularities. He worked for 35 years at IBM’s research center, where, aided by the use of computers, he produced pioneering fractal images and discovered the set that now bears his name. At the same time, he taught at institutions such as Harvard and Yale and held positions at research centers across Europe and North America. Mandelbrot applied mathematical concepts to diverse fields: statistical physics, hydrology, geology, economics, and computer science, among others. His studies of the “wild randomness” of financial markets and of scaling laws influenced the development of econophysics and volatility modeling. His work left a lasting impact on scientific visualization and the understanding of complex phenomena, opening paths for interdisciplinary applications and inspiring generations of researchers in the natural and social sciences.
