Betsy Nagelsen (Helen Elizabeth Nagelsen McCormack) is a former American professional tennis player best known for a long WTA career with an emphasis on doubles. She emerged as the top junior in the world in 1973, won significant titles at a young age, and received fair-play awards that marked her as a promising presence on the tour. As a professional, Nagelsen won two Grand Slam doubles titles — the Australian Open in 1978 and 1980 — and reached the singles final of the Australian Open in 1978. Over 21 years on the circuit she claimed 25 doubles titles and three singles titles, finishing 1981 ranked No. 23 in singles and reaching No. 11 in doubles in 1988. Among her most notable victories are wins over leading players such as Martina Navratilova and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario. She was a four-time member of the United States Wightman Cup team and, after retiring in 1996, worked as a commentator for networks including ABC, ESPN, and Australia’s Nine Network. She married Mark McCormack and helped establish the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, which houses the Women’s Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame.
