William Blaine “Bill” Richardson (1947–2023) was an American politician, diplomat and author, known for a long public career spanning Congress, federal administrations and the government of New Mexico. A congressman for 14 years, he served as a leader within the Hispanic caucus and chaired committees on natural resources and Native American affairs, sponsoring laws on tribal self-government and dam safety. His legislative work and relations with Mexico earned him Mexico’s Aztec Eagle decoration. A trusted name in foreign policy, Richardson served as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations and as Secretary of Energy in the Clinton administration. In those roles he took part in major international negotiations — including mediations that helped secure the release of American citizens — and played a role in diplomatic operations in countries such as Iraq, North Korea and the Congo. At the Department of Energy he faced controversies connected to the Wen Ho Lee case that marked his tenure. Elected governor of New Mexico (2003–2011), he also chaired the 2004 Democratic National Convention and led the Democratic Governors Association. After leaving office he continued to work on humanitarian and private diplomatic missions, notably efforts to obtain the release of detainees abroad. His career combined legislative influence, diplomatic experience and a legacy in Native American and energy policy.
