Bleuette Bernon, born Léontine Ernestine Gauché, was a lyric artist and French actress active in silent cinema from the late 19th century into the 1900s. From modest origins, she first made her mark as a singer in Parisian cafés-concert before being noticed by Georges Méliès, who recruited her for film as early as 1899. Bernon is best remembered for her roles in Méliès’s films, where she played both historical and fantastic characters — among them the bride in Le Coucher de la mariée (1899), the fairy godmother in Cendrillon (1899), and Phœbé in Le Voyage dans la Lune (1902). Her stage presence and manner of movement on camera made her one of the first actresses to portray imaginary figures in the emerging fiction cinema. Over a brief film career, she has been reliably identified in eight of Méliès’s short films, though some accounts credit her with around twenty appearances. In 1909 she left the studios for good and returned to perform on the stages of Parisian cafés-concert. Her legacy lies in a pioneering contribution to filmed theatre and in participating in key works of French silent cinema.
