Bob Gibson was one of the most dominant pitchers in American baseball, spending 17 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (1959–1975). Known for his fierce competitiveness, he compiled 251 wins, 3,117 strikeouts and a 2.91 earned run average (ERA) over his career. He was a nine-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion, two-time Cy Young Award winner, and the National League MVP in 1968, a season often regarded as one of the greatest individual campaigns by a pitcher. The 1968 season is frequently cited as the peak of his career: a 1.12 ERA for the year and 17 strikeouts in Game 1 of the World Series. He also threw a no-hitter in 1971 and played a decisive role in the Cardinals’ title runs in 1964 and 1967, including three complete-game victories in that World Series. His durability and ability to dominate hitters placed him among the top strikeout pitchers of the pre–free agency era. His life and career were marked by early hardship and by diverse sporting choices — he even had a connection with the Harlem Globetrotters’ basketball organization before committing fully to baseball. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility (1981) and had his number 45 retired by the Cardinals, leaving a lasting legacy as a model of competitiveness and excellence on the mound.
