Bruce Alexander McPherson is an American politician associated with public life in California, best known for serving as California Secretary of State from March 2005 to January 2007. A member of the Republican Party for much of his career, his appointment to the state cabinet came during a period of transition when he succeeded Kevin Shelley and was confirmed unanimously by a Democrat-controlled legislature. In 2006 he lost the election for a full term to Democrat Debra Bowen. Before joining the state executive branch, McPherson served in the legislature: he was a member of the California Assembly (1993–1996) and the State Senate (1996–2004). He also had a long record of local service as a member of the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, to which he was elected in 2012 and where he served for twelve years before retiring in 2024. A journalism graduate of California Polytechnic State University, he worked as an editor for the family-owned Santa Cruz Sentinel, a career that informs his public work. In personal terms, his life includes notable events that attracted public attention. As of 2026, he remains the most recent Republican to have held the office of California Secretary of State.
