Jean Cabut, known by the pen name Cabu, was one of the most renowned French cartoonists and caricaturists of the postwar period. He became a prominent figure in the satirical press, created popular series and characters such as Le Grand Duduche, and contributed to influential publications for decades. His output includes comic albums and books of cartoons that blend political humor with social criticism.
Over his career he regularly published with Dargaud and Albin Michel, including volumes of Le Grand Duduche and collections of cartoons about figures and episodes in French politics — works that reflect his ironic view of society and power. This body of work established his reputation with both the general public and critics.
Cabu is also remembered for his cultural impact and central role in debates about freedom of expression in France. He was a victim of the attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices in 2015, an event that internationalized his story and provoked widespread mourning. His legacy endures in the tradition of French satirical drawing and in his influence on subsequent generations of cartoonists.
