Camille Léonie Doncieux (1847–1879) was a model and a central figure in the personal and artistic life of Claude Monet, becoming his first wife and the mother of his two children. From a family that moved to Paris during the Second Empire, she began working as a model at a young age and met Monet in 1865, subsequently appearing frequently in her husband’s paintings. Her presence is found in important works from the early Impressionist period, including intimate portrayals such as the portrait on her deathbed. Their relationship met family opposition and economic hardship: they experienced periods of poverty, flight from creditors and moves between villages and towns—events that accompanied Monet’s rising career. They married in 1870 in a civil ceremony witnessed by Gustave Courbet; Camille’s dowry was kept in a separate fund to shield it from the painter’s debts. Camille’s health declined during the 1870s, especially after the family grew and amid the difficulties of sharing household responsibilities with another family that was financially dependent on the Monets. She died in Vétheuil in 1879 at the age of 32; the exact cause is unclear in the sources. Her legacy endures chiefly through her recurring presence in Monet’s canvases and the role she played in the private and artistic life surrounding the emerging Impressionist movement.
