Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve was one of the most influential literary critics of nineteenth-century France, also working as a poet, novelist, and historian. He became known for advocating a biographical-intentionalist method: in his view, an author’s work can be fully understood only in light of that author’s life and intentions. This stance shaped much of the period’s literary criticism and influenced later thinkers, though it provoked strong controversy.

His critical and historical output includes the monumental study Port-Royal (1837–1859), a work that renewed interest in religious history and was seen by some as an attempt at a total history. Sainte-Beuve contributed to contemporary journals and took public positions during the Second Empire, becoming a member of the Senate.

The reception of his work was ambivalent: admired for his erudition and powers of synthesis, he was also criticized for biographical excesses and contested judgments—he even rejected authors who are now central, such as Baudelaire and Balzac. His legacy remains central to understanding debates about critical method and the relationship between life and literature in the French tradition.
