Charles Mackerras was an Australian conductor with an international career, acknowledged as an authority on the operas of Leoš Janáček and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and on the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. He studied at the NSW State Conservatorium and continued his training in Prague; early on he was principal oboist of the Sydney Symphony before dedicating himself to conducting. In England he established himself at Sadler’s Wells (now English National Opera) and was principal conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra (1954–1956). He led major houses — the Royal Opera House, the Hamburg State Opera, English National Opera and the Metropolitan Opera — and championed Janáček’s music in the West, a contribution he regarded as his most important musical legacy. He pioneered historically informed performance practice, notably through recordings and ornamentation of works by Handel and Mozart. He also produced well-known arrangements, such as the ballet Pineapple Poll, and led symbolic events like the inaugural concert at the Sydney Opera House in 1973. Mackerras remained active until shortly before his death in 2010, and was remembered by colleagues and institutions as a defining figure in twentieth-century operatic and orchestral repertoire.
