Charles Péguy was a French writer, poet, essayist and editor whose work combined socialism and nationalism and, from 1908 onward, a conversion to Catholicism that came to strongly mark his texts. As editor and principal contributor to the review Les Cahiers de la Quinzaine (1900–1914), Péguy published essays and poems by himself and important contemporaries, playing a notable role in pre‑World War I France’s intellectual debate. Influenced by figures such as Henri Bergson, Romain Rolland and Lucien Herr, he was active in the Dreyfusard movement and joined the Socialist Party in 1895, although he later criticized socialist leaders as traitors to the nation. His free‑verse poetry, notably Le Porche du Mystère de la Deuxième Vertu, reached wide circulation and admiration, including among public figures such as Charles de Gaulle. Called up in the Great War as a lieutenant, Péguy died in combat in 1914, becoming an ambiguous symbol in French memory: cited both by résistants and republicans and by sectors of the Vichy regime. His literary and moral work continued to inspire and provoke diverse interpretations throughout the twentieth century.
