Clay Pell is an attorney, military officer, and American public figure whose career has included roles in public service and military law. He has held federal government positions, including Deputy Assistant Secretary for International and Foreign Language Education at the U.S. Department of Education, where he promoted language teaching and cultural proficiency policies and received recognition from professional organizations in the field. A graduate of Harvard and Georgetown Law, Pell joined the United States Coast Guard as a military justice officer, serving on active duty and later in the reserve as a commander and judge advocate; more recently he has served as a judge on the Coast Guard Court of Criminal Appeals. He also worked on strategic national security planning and was a White House Fellow. In politics, he sought the Democratic nomination for governor of Rhode Island in 2014 in a competitive race that drew regional attention. His career combines military service, public administration, and advocacy for language education, and his public profile is also tied to a family tradition of prominence in politics.
