Coline Serreau is a French filmmaker, actress and screenwriter whose work holds a prominent place in contemporary French cinema and theatre. She became internationally known for the popular and critical success of Trois Hommes et un couffin (1985), which drew more than 12 million viewers, and for screenplays and films such as La Crise (for which she won the César for Best Screenplay) and La Belle Verte. Her career also includes acting, composing film music and directing choirs. Daughter of prominent figures in theatre and literature, she studied literature and a range of artistic disciplines that display her versatility—from the conservatory of music to the circus—before turning to writing and directing for the stage, opera and film. She made her directorial debut in 1975 and established herself with films that move between social comedy and the cinema of ideas. In addition to her film career, Serreau has directed operas and dance productions at major venues such as the Opéra Bastille, and has maintained an active theatrical practice as a playwright and director. Since 2003 she has led the Chorale du Delta. Her body of work combines popular appeal, social engagement and formal experimentation, influencing generations of creators in audiovisual media and the performing arts.
