Cosmo Gordon Lang was a prominent British Anglican cleric who served as Archbishop of York (1908–1928) and Archbishop of Canterbury (1928–1942), the highest office in the Church of England. Born into a clerical family in Scotland, he distinguished himself early through academic achievement at Glasgow and Oxford and by involvement in social initiatives, including the founding of the Toynbee Hall settlement to assist the poor of London’s East End.
