Davey Williams (David Carlous Williams Jr.) was an American professional baseball player who played second base, spending his entire Major League Baseball career with the New York Giants from 1949 to 1955. Known for his contact ability and loose swing, he appeared in 517 major-league games, hit 32 home runs and posted a .252 batting average; his best season came in 1952, when he set personal highs in home runs (13), runs scored (70) and RBIs (48). In 1953 Williams recorded the best batting average of his career (.297) and was selected to the National League All-Star Game, taking the field that year and contributing defensively to the league’s victory. In 1954 he was a regular starter during the campaign that led the Giants to the World Series title, appearing in all four games of the series. Williams’s career was cut short by a serious back injury sustained in a collision in 1955, which forced him to retire at age 27. Immediately afterward he worked as a coach for the Giants and had a brief stint as a minor-league manager. He is remembered as a solid infielder from a successful period for the Giants and for his role in the club’s 1950s history.
