David Blunkett is a British Labour Party politician who held senior ministerial posts in the New Labour government. From Sheffield and blind from birth, he rose from local leadership to Parliament in 1987, building a career on the party’s left before joining Tony Blair’s core government. He was appointed Secretary of State for Education and Employment in 1997, a central role in an administration that prioritized education and that took controversial measures such as introducing university tuition fees. Early in Labour’s second term he was promoted to Home Secretary, where he emphasized immigration and asylum policies, advocating tighter control of flows and measures to reduce illegal immigration. His public life also attracted extensive media attention over personal matters that ultimately led to his resignation from the ministerial post in 2004. Over his career Blunkett became known for overcoming barriers related to disability while remaining active in national politics and public debate on education, immigration and public service, leaving a legacy as an influential Labour figure in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
