David Hyrum Smith was a religious leader, missionary, and cultural figure associated with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS). The youngest son of Joseph and Emma Smith, he became known for his missionary work in the Midwest, the Utah Territory, and California between 1865 and 1873, where he engaged in theological debates with preachers from various currents, including representatives of the LDS Church. From 1873 to 1885 he served as a counselor in the church’s First Presidency, assisting his brother Joseph Smith III in ecclesiastical leadership and organization.
Beyond his religious activity, he was a poet, painter, singer, and recognized naturalist: he earned the nickname “Dulce Cantor de Israel” for the quality of his voice and his ability to lead song. His paintings of Nauvoo are preserved at the historic site dedicated to his father, maintained by the Community of Christ.
David H. Smith’s life ended marked by mental illness; biographical studies indicate a deterioration beginning in the 1870s that led to many years of institutionalization until his death in 1904. His literary and artistic work and his role as a missionary make up the most remembered parts of his legacy.
