Dean Paul Martin was an American actor, singer and pilot, known both for his family ties to entertainer Dean Martin and for his own career in show business. He began at thirteen as “Dino” in the teen pop trio Dino, Desi & Billy, which had modest success from 1965 to 1968 targeting the youth audience of the time. He later reverted to his given name and continued working as a musician and actor. As an athlete he excelled in junior tennis, even competing at Wimbledon, and as an actor he received critical recognition: he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in the film Players (1979). On television he starred in the series Misfits of Science (1985–86), which ran for one season. Aviation was another central facet of his life: he earned his pilot’s license as a teenager and, in 1981, joined the California Air National Guard as a pilot. He died in 1987 at age 35 when the F‑4 Phantom he was flying crashed in the San Bernardino Mountains during a snowstorm, an event that had a strong personal and family impact.
